Digital Learning

Access to teaching and learning resources remains a major obstacle to quality education in rural Madagascar. Many schools lack the infrastructure and resources needed to deliver teaching effectively. These challenges have deepened disparities in educational outcomes between urban and rural areas.

Digital Learning

We provide teachers and students with tailored resources made accessible through solar-powered digital devices.

The programme draws on best practices and advanced digital learning technologies, while providing curriculum-aligned resources developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

As part of the teacher model, all educators in participating schools receive individual tablets, enabling access to teaching materials and professional development content for self-guided learning.

The tablets connect to a local intranet system powered by Raspberry Pi, which operates without internet. Teachers can either download resources in advance or connect directly during lessons.

This initiative complements and reinforces our partners’ broader efforts to improve education quality, particularly through ongoing teacher training programmes.

The student model uses One Billion's hardware and software system, where students learn directly on tablets. The Onetab device is a dedicated, low-cost tool that delivers adaptive, personalized instruction designed to help children become literate and numerate in their own language.

We train teachers to play facilitative roles while children drive their  own learning on the tablets.

Lessons are tailored to individual students, drawing on thousands of learning units. The onetab can be seamlessly passed from student to student and will automatically adjust to their individual level level.

With just 30 minutes of access per student per day, early findings are that use of onetab has significantly improved reading, writing, and counting skills.

The Change We Create

Our first pilots of teacher and student tablets in rural schools began in 2024 and were met with enthusiasm from parents, teachers, and students alike. For many of these students who do not have access to textbooks, the tablets provide their first reliable source of lessons and learning materials. Early assessments and feedback confirmed the value of the initiative, encouraging us to expand to 13 additional schools within just one year.

We target schools with very limited resources, where digital tools can have the greatest impact. To date, we have distributed over 260 tablets and reached more than 3,000 students, opening new pathways for learning and opportunities. We plan to expand to 18 more schools in the next year.
